Hi
Pretty sure he said it was near Crumlin which was not too far from where I lived at the time...but it was a long time ago...I had seen the Time tour advertised in the press and was desperate to get a ticket so travelled up to the big city to make sure I got one. I even had to pay postage at the ticket booth for them to send it out to me in Wales when they released them.
I recall Mik Kaminski playing violin in the Time concert at Wembley and the little Star Wars type robot moving about on stage...shame Hugh McDowell (and Melvyn Gale) could not have been asked back as well...would have loved to see him throwing the cello around live.
Saw Jeff Lynne's ELO in Birmingham in 2016...awesome concert with superb sound and lighting effects.Well worth the wait.
Cheers

Hi all My first post. Sad to hear about Hugh McDowell passing away. In the summer 1981 as a teenager I had travelled up from South Wales to London to order some Time Tour tickets from a ticket office on Oxford Street. The concert was at Wembley Arena in Dec 81. On the way back to my Aunt's house in Hampstead I bumped into Hugh on a London Bus near Golders Green. I recognised him from the snakeskin effect trousers he was wearing ...he had worn them in the band picture from the liner of the New World Record album!! I asked if I could have a chat as I was a huge ELO fan and he proved to be great company. He told me that Jeff Lynne had decided to part company with the string section as it could all now be done on synths. He was philosophical about the split and on recognising my very pronounced Welsh accent told me he was in the process of converting an old Welsh chapel in the village of Crumlin in the South Wales valleys into a recording studio and rehearsal venue. I told him I had just ordered tickets for the Time tour at Wembley but he said he would probably give going to any of the concerts a miss....who could blame him. Anyway we soon parted company and he remains to this day the only member of ELO that I have ever met and talked with. I seem to recall a short while later that he got a mention in the News of the World about various 'Rock and Roll' goings on whilst he was living in Crumlin but I can't recall the exact story. RIP Hugh..nice to have met you. Lucky you to have met ELO royalty! a pity the 'selfie' phenomenom wasn't around in those days as I bet Hughie would have allowed a few pics. I have stood next to Mik at a bar (probably touched him too,cue evil stare from Vlog...) and I also saw him approaching me in Knaresborough North Yorkshire and just as I was about to say hi, Mik went into a bookies!

Found this tribute to Hugh. I learned some things that I hadn't known before, he had a bigger career than I realized. I'm still sad.

Another part of ELOs history is lost, please Jeff if you happen to read this, make up with the other guys before it's too late will you? Time is running out and although you don't want to play with the others, just make it right with them..... I don't see that happening with them anytime soon. They all lead different lives now for better or worse.
You can bring back the magic but it'll never turn out the way it was your head.

I'm not sure why people expect Jeff to comment on the passing of past band members. All told, there have been 45 members of ELO, according to Wikipedia, including the current line-up. My speculation is that Jeff looks at these people as past co-workers, not friends, with a few exceptions. I wouldn't comment on the passing of co-workers from thirty or forty-something years ago. I've always seen that part of his life with Hugh and the others as more hired gun than friends. Most groups I've heard never work as mates having a good time but as working partners. Relationships of a closer nature take time to forge. As far as I'm concerned that's none of our business as you cited. If it's one thing I admire about him is how to keep a low profile on anything outside of his work. Every fan assumes he grieves the same way they do. Death is a very delicate matter. Give the man the time and space to deal with it.

So sad to say that it is Hugh Mc Dowell's funeral today. With ELO he was a fabulous cellist with a great stage presence . A very nice guy too. Rest in peace Hughie

I wonder if any of his old band mates will be there?

Just happened upon this, very very sad to hear. I always was impressed by his skill both in studio & on stage when he very often had better stage presence than the rest of the band. On the positive at least we still have Bev. My regards go the family. He won't be forgotten.

Bevey will need to send another standing spray of flowers. Part 2...
From what I remember, Hughie and Kelly were in or formed Orkestra. I think Hugh might've been with Part 2 at the beginning, but I can't be sure.
As for any floral tribute...
It has to be in the shape of a cello - that bounces around. I know that sounds silly, but Hughie's cello was NEVER still. It's how we remember him.

It's not silly at all. If I had the money, that's exactly what I would send.
