I know that JL does sign autographs sometimes. He can't do it all the time, though. He likes being a bit reclusive when he's not "on stage" or in an interview, and that's his right. In interviews, he avoids certain topics and pre-screens the questions, I understand. Even onstage, he's not very effusive or outgoing. I'm sure it's very disappointing for the fans who crave that kind of contact, but I can't hold it against him. I think if a person wanted to make some type of indictment of JL's character, they'd need to look elsewhere, where they may or may not find something negative. This just doesn't rise to that level for me.

elophile , someone on the thread threw that theory with no backing whatsoever and everyone grabbed themselves from it like a lifeline. The guy hadn't behaved like an aggresive scumbag at all, he asked him for an autograph very politely. It was me who threw that theory out and it's correct. I don't need any backing and everyone grabbed onto it because they could see for themselves that it was true. The man in the video was a professional autograph hound. He didn't give a crap about Jeff or his music. That little pleading thing he did is what they do. They're aggressive leeches. Like I said in the first thread they congregated where I was waiting to meet Jeff outside the Radio City show in NY and I've seen other videos of them on youtube. They've got a certain look and I think that guy was one. I could tell he was one the same way if I saw a fish swimming I could tell it was a fish. How can you tell exactly? To me it was just a fan trying to get his guitar signed by his musical hero.

What is your theory? "Jeff Lynne's #1 fan just happens to be strolling through the airport with a guitar and a pen when... What are the chances?! Jeff Lynne himself appears."

I said how: I could tell he was one the same way if I saw a fish swimming I could tell it was a fish. Well, understand that you not pointing out any particular feature of the guy which exposed him clearly as an autograph hound made me keep on wondering about it despite having read what you had said there. What is your theory? "Jeff Lynne's #1 fan just happens to be strolling through the airport with a guitar and a pen when... What are the chances?! Jeff Lynne himself appears." It's not rare at all for fans to know where their idols are going. In fact fans normally wait for them where they think they'll be able to get autographs or photos with them.

If it had been around the gig your assertion might hold some weight. But an airport? Smacks of stalking or professional autograph hunting to me. Wouldn’t mind betting Jeff recognised him.

I waited for Jeff where I thought I'd be able to meet him. Funny though, I forgot to bring my guitar and my stack of 15 ELO records along.

I don't think it was an airport. As far as I can remember he was arriving at a radio.

That could be because -as far as I know- you don't play guitar. If you played, that instrument could mean a lot to you, and could also be the best place to have your hero's autograph. And for the one signing, it's the same to sign one on a paper than on a guitar, it takes almost the same time. And the guy didn't bring along with him a stack of 15 ELO recordings. In fact, he didn't even bring one with him. Sorry elophile , I don't want to annoy you any more about this but being honest, I still don't see it. In any case, we could consider I "dissed" Jeff for quite a long while and I'm still alive, so I'll leave it here. You don't waste your flamethrower's fuel and I come out of this unscathed, what do you say?

For some reason, when you quoted me my words appeared inside your dialogue box, as if you have said them. I'll forgive you for plagiarizing me, and we are even.

This just doesn't rise to that level for me. Fair point, I find it a reasonable opinion. Now what about the original subject of this thread (Kelly Groucutt's son sayings)? Well, what he's saying certainly doesn't cast JL in a good light, and there might well be something unsavory going on.There are a couple of reasons I might withhold judgment on this matter: It's the recollections of a person who is now deceased, telling what he remembers as told to him by another person (his father) who is also deceased (although there is some record of Kelly's own telling of the story of this period). 1. I would not expect the son to be completely objective in such a situation, especially given the very real suffering his father (and the family, as a result) went through during this time. 2. It might be difficult to confirm some of the details since both father and son are deceased. It might all be just as Chris said, or not. Also, I don't know much about the recording business and/or laws and common practices during that time. I could take the time to learn about that, I suppose. I guess I've just decided that JL is a person who probably has some skeletons in his closet and some serious faults and regrets, things that he's ashamed of- like many people, nothing extraordinary about that, and we shouldn't be surprised by that general fact. I've basically made my peace (more or less) with some of what I believe to be true, and I just don't get too worked up about the rest. I don't idealize or demonize him, and I don't think I try to excuse or deny any of his faults because of his enormous talent. I do try to give people the benefit of the doubt in general, though. In the end, he's just a person, albeit a musically brilliant one, and that's OK.
