Jeff has apparently reiterated to a fan(who had a photo taken with him) at Manchester that Richard "is on the mend and will be visiting them soon".

Whatever Rich is going through at the moment I hope it isn't what someone has suggested. There's no delicate way of telling the public when all it would do is put them in a panic for no reason. If he is dealing with something so aggressive he's chosen to emancipate himself from dealing with it until Team Jeff can give us a straight answer. Privacy is the watchword for now. Without giving too much away, everything you need to know can be found in the above message. I just wish the insider who originally leaked this information had respected Richard's wishes, but there's a very good reason I've chosen to remain openly silent on the subject of his continued absence and any possible health problems... (This is also partly why my book has now almost certainly slipped into next year - not that I consider the release of such a relatively trivial project more important than one of my biggest musical heroes privately fighting something.)

Just seen it on Facebook that another fan who has met the backing band today and had the obligatory photo taken with them says he asked about Richard and was told "he might do one the Birmingham gigs".

Saw another post from someone in one of The ELO groups who was at a charity auction who met Jeff and Camille who told her that he is on the mend and they will see him in London soon.

as i recall from the bev bevan book, richard tandy started out as a cellist or violinist and only moved to keyboards when the new moog synth came to the market and he learned to play it. so im sure his understanding of the orchestration of strings is pretty good.

Thought Richard started his ELO career as their bass player?

From what I can tell, Richard started off as a pianist, switching to guitar and then later the bass before returning to mostly keyboards once the Minimoog arrived, though he did still demonstrate his guitar skills on rare occasions - the introduction to Strange Magic was his work, for example. I've read that he deeply regretted ever moving away from the piano as much from the mid '60s to early '70s, as he felt this prevented him from becoming an even better player. In recalling the Time Tour, Dave Morgan mentioned that Richard would obsess over scales, even having the road crew set him up a Wurlitzer electric piano backstage so he could practice hours ahead of his colleagues arriving at venues. By the time MIDI became prevalent as a studio tool, Richard appears to be the one who threw himself into programming the most, and it's claimed much of the extensive sequencing on those final two pre-split ELO albums in particular was the result of Richard alone having the patience to tame this relatively new technology (over just a few months, Jeff went from experimenting with a full Oberheim system, the Fairlight CMI IIx and finally a Synclavier II, each proving more frustrating to him than the last). On top of all this, let's not forget that Richard was highly instrumental in coming up with string arrangements, plus he's credited for harmonium and harmonica. Oh, and he also produced an unreleased album that Dave Morgan recorded with Jim Cleary for Jet Records in 1977 - the guy is a phenomenal talent who deserves far more than just to be remembered for his magic fingers when surrounded by a bank of synthesisers!

I don't think Richard knows how much the fans appreciate and love him.
When I was waiting outside of Radio City to meet Jeff Richard came out, waved and smiled but then just got in a car and rode off.
Everyone was cheering for him and I'm sure there was a lot of love in that crowd for him too!
I know I would have loved to meet him.

Thanks for that, ShardEnder. I've been listening more closely to the gamut of ELO recordings, and have come to appreciate Richard's work immensely. I believe that Richard contributed more to the string arrangements than Louis Clark did, although he probably doesn't read or write music as well as Louis does. I think I have to amend my chant to "Jeff Lynne is mostly ELO, but so is Richard Tandy a little bit."

That's what I'm having trouble with, I had the same thing as RT (due to doing the same job for 30 years) and with physiotherapy but not surgery, it cleared within about 2 months. Even if he had surgery surely it would have fixed the problem by now, after all it's been over 2 years ....

Even if he had surgery surely it would have fixed the problem by now, after all it's been over 2 years .... I think it's important to respect whatever decision RT may have made about touring (I plan to be retired by his age, regardless of my health ), as well as his right to privacy about his health. Having said that, his case may have been particularly serious, and we must remember that he is quite a bit older than some of us, and so recovery may be more complicated. We also don't know if there is some additional health issue, and it's none of our business. I don't think they owe us any explanation, although some of what JL has said recently has led to some of this confusion and speculation about Richard's condition.

I just hope that Richard is doing well and that he is happy, whatever his decision about future touring may be. I also hope he knows how much the fans care about him! I would love to see him join Jeff and Co. on the next tour, but not at the expense of his health or happiness.
