Lucky England. Only because of Kane (and because Tunisia couldn't defend an aerial cross for their lives). On the run of play England sucked. Not a single idea with the ball at their feet. BTW my guess of Kane being WC top scorer is looking good! Phew that was close, the ref has been signed by the Tunisia team

BTW my guess of Kane being WC top scorer is looking good! Phew that was close, the ref has been signed by the Tunisia team I'm sick of penalties. Not just because referees get it wrong so often, but also because most times there is no correlation between the danger in the play that originated the penalty (10% goal chance if most) and the danger a penalty implies (80% goal chance). They should ban the penalty rule and replace it by just giving free kick from where the foul is commited, even if it's inside the box. That way there will always be relation between the risk of the play and the punishment for the foul -and players will stop diving and try to score the goal instead-. We've seen too many penalties deciding games lately and it's a pathetic way of ruining the game.

Very true but we are lumbered with it and VAR is giving more penalties, maybe the players will learn they are been watched from all angles. Although in saying that why didn’t VAR intervene with Tunisia’s penalty and the two or three possible penalties on Kane, it’s just not reliable or consistent.

2 more penalties today. Just the first set of games from group stages and we already have seen as many penalties as in the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. It's crazy, it's ruining the game for me.

it is poor and even worse people are now claiming everything is a penalty including strikers throwing themselves to the ground and forgetting how crap the rest of their play on front of goal was

Wandering around the depths of Twitter I came across this World Cup anecdote of Gary Lineker which I didn't know of (and was better off not knowing): Did you, Horacewimp? Now I understand why so many people are giving him shit over every single thing he tweets.

And one thing that apparently has been forgotten is the yellow card for the divers. With all the flopping we've seen this WC I don't think one booking was awarded to the actors. No wonder that between the penalty-happy referees and the non-booking-for-divers policy attacking players are more concentrated in getting penalties than goals.

It might be claimed that VAR holds up the action, but it's identifying clearcut infringements in the box. Maybe it'll prompt players to act sensibly. The fact that the persistent 'bearhugs' on Harry Kane by the Tunisians didn't result in any free, let alone a single penalty, is baffling.

IMHO kane was pushing himself backwards and then throwing himself. it is quite a good trick must work in the premiership but not here... although articles are suggesting earlier fouls by england players...https://inews.co.uk/sport/football/world-cup/var-england-tunisia-harry-kane-foul-penalty/

My problem is not with VAR, my problem is the soft criteria for awarding penalties. What you'd call not acting "sensibly" is just fighting for the ball, which is part of football. The problem IMO is that referees have been so penalty-happy that any normal fight for the ball generates a theatrical dive by the forward. I'm not a fan of calling slight contacts. For me, to give a penalty it has to be a blatant foul. I would never have given France than penalty on Griezmann, Argentina that penalty on Meza or Tunisia that penalty on Ben Youssef. And, in case of doubt, I'd rather not give a penalty that was than give one that wasn't.
