Is it safe to post here? BSJ not about? good... I'm not a big tv series watcher,I'd rather watch a docu or the news or something that I watched as a kid. I like music progs too such as Top of the Pops (the repeats). I could happily dispense with the satellite box and just have the terrestrial channels but Mrs T wouldn't want that...

It's really good. Did you watch Breaking Bad? No, I didn't. Do you know that Better Call Saul is a prequel to Breaking Bad? You don't have to watch Breaking Bad to watch Better Call Saul but you'll understand the plot better if you do. I like Better Call Saul more than Breaking Bad. It's got a dark sense of humor.

A lot of people really speak very highly of The Sopranos and Breaking Bad. I believe them. I'm sure they're both phenomenal shows. It's just really difficult for me to get into TV series...not sure what it is. Kind of like sports for me, too...

I just rewatched The Sopranos, recently, and I'm convinced it was the best written show on television. My uncle and ex boss says the same about the Sopranos. It's a series I'm planning on watching rather sooner than later. Do you know that Better Call Saul is a prequel to Breaking Bad? You don't have to watch Breaking Bad to watch Better Call Saul but you'll understand the plot better if you do. That, exactly that, is what my friend told me. And maybe that's the reason I was so lazy about going for it: I had to watch a whole big series to finally get to watch the one I want to. Timeblue , Like Helmut, I really enjoy British humor. Different way of life and points of view. A lot of people I know doesn’t get it. Well, to be honest I'm not always a big fan of British humor -or humour, given that it's British-. At times I find it funny, like in this series I was talking about, or like in the case of Benny Hill, many of whose sketches I find totally hilarious. Other times, I really don't get it. Monty Python, the most celebrated humor act in Britain by far, hardly ever makes me laugh. Most times I find it forced, rough and vulgar. I just don't get it, and I could say the same about other British big acts of the business whose sketches I've watched. Each country has it's own kind of humor, and I feel closer to the American humor than to the British one. unomusette 's comment about the series of the New Zealand folk duo reminded me that I omitted mentioning one of my favorite series: Nashville. Well, I'll give the series 7/10 and I'm probably being generous. It's romantic-oriented, very predictable and falls a lot into common places, but man, the music! It's insanely good! I'm a fan if it only for that reason. Well, of course among the tons of songs it features there's a lot of waste, but I have in my phone about 40 songs from the show which range from "good" to "masterpiece", most of them of the modern country music genre.

Yeah, watching a whole series just so you can start watching another one is a bit much. I do still think you could watch and enjoy Better Call Saul on it's own - there would just be a certain level to it you'd be missing but you wouldn't even know so... I do agree with Chippa that if you could only watch one American series it should be The Sopranos. It really was the best television show maybe ever.

Fargo is excellent, if a little gory at times. I also like The Americans. and been going back to the '90s lately to re-watch The West Wing and Frasier
bit of Frasier trivia - everyone knew that Daphne Moon was played by an actress from Manchester but the guy who played Frasier's father just passed away and in the obit I learned that he was also from Manchester. Never would have known it from his accent! Turns out he moved to the US at 19 and worked hard at sounding American.

I don't like anything too sweary or gory which everything appears to be these days.

I don't like anything too sweary or gory which everything appears to be these days. True. A series is not a series these days if it doesn't include a whole lot of swearing, exaggerate violence, graphic disgusting scenes and scandalous pornography. It bothers me too, particularly the violence scenes, which they show in detail to an unnecesary point. It's sickly sadistic.

If it's just thrown in there for no reason it makes me feel like my intelligence has been insulted - no quicker way to turn me off.

It might be necessary to the plot to let you know that a certain character has been tortured. That's all you need to know, probably via a few scenes. It's not necessary to show you 5 minutes of finger cutting with blood flowing as if it were a fountain, agony screams, making the poor guy swallow a red-hot stone, cutting his balls off, stretching him in the rack, all of that shown to the detail as much as possible. That's pointless sadism, and that is never necessary.

(You may have just given the ninjas some new ideas for keeping the forum in check though!)

Well, there's a lot of that in many of today's series.
The Ninjas? Bah, that's just basic regular treatment for them. They are working on way more sophisticated techniques.
